Maxwell House Coffee
Maxwell House is a coffee brand manufactured by Kraft Foods. The coffee is named after the hotel in Tennessee. Up till the 1980s it was the largest-selling coffee in the U.S. and is now barely outranked by Folgers - being the highest ranking for years and then moved to second place which is still a very good placement.Do you know how Maxwell House began?
Joel Cheek, who developed the coffee began providing it to the Maxwell House hotel in the late 1800s. Joel and John Neal, decided to start their own business which they named the Nashville Coffee and Manufacturing Company which was later changed. The company was eventually taken over when all their assets was purchased by Postum Company.
Teddy Roosevelt supposedly visited Tennessee where he enjoyed a cup of their coffee at the Maxwell House hotel. After drinking it was claimed he made the statement "Good to the last drop." Then it was said that after overhearing him quote this that Joel chose to use this as his logo for their Maxwell House coffee. The former president of General Foods Corporation, Clifford Spiller is the one who really wrote the slogan. The trademark is still used and it appears as their logo.
The choices:
When Maxwell House coffee was first created the only type available was the caffeinated kind. Over a period of years the makers began working on decaffeinated brands. In 1985 they were completed and were allowed to be sold at stores. Later another brand which was known as the Maxwell House Lite was created. It was a reduced caffeine blend. It was released just shortly after the decaffeinated instant coffee hit the stores.
Early Advertisement:
Did you know that one of the first forms of advertisement that the Maxwell House company used was on popular TV shows such as Mama. It starred Peggy Wood and was based on the play and film I Remember Mama. Another famous actress that sponsored the Maxwell Coffee company is Margaret Hamilton who played as the wicked witch in The Wizard Of Oz. The sales of Maxwell House Coffee has only increased over time.
