Most people think of a coffee table as a long low table that would sit in front of the sofa or couch. So that when you sit down with your coffee you would have a place to put it. Hence the name "coffee table". But it was used for so much more, such as magazines, books, and other small items like pictures, the remote to the TV and of course coasters for your coffee cups.
